John Eustace is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Jon Dahl Tomasson at Blackburn Rovers.
According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the former Birmingham City manager could make his return to football with Rovers.
The future of Tomasson at Ewood Park is uncertain following reports that the Dane has threatened to resign from the Championship side this week.
Tomasson has been in charge of the Lancashire club since the summer of 2022 and led Blackburn to a seventh-place finish last season.
However, a string of developments behind the scenes has led to a growing frustration from the 47-year-old, which has cast doubt over his future.
As of writing, Tomasson remains in charge of the second tier side, but he has been linked with taking the reins of the Swedish national team.
Blackburn are keeping their options open in case the Dane does depart the club, with Eustace seen as the number one candidate to take over the first team squad.
Eustace has been out of work since October, having been controversially dismissed by Birmingham after a positive start to the season.
The 44-year-old was praised for his time at St. Andrew’s, leaving the team sitting sixth in the table before being replaced by Wayne Rooney.
Tomasson has similarly earned praise for his time at Ewood Park, particularly due to the team's performances in spite of the growing tensions behind the scenes during his time in charge.
The latest incident involves the transfer saga surrounding Duncan McGuire, with Rovers failing to sign the American due to an error by the club which meant he was not registered in time.
The Blackburn manager was blocked from speaking to the media following the incident, which only further highlighted the seriousness of the issues at the club as a result of their paperwork mixup.
Eustace is waiting in the wings, as Tommason’s future with the club remains uncertain.
Blackburn are currently 18th in the Championship table, just five points clear of the relegation zone.
Rovers have not won any of their last eight league games, which has seen them plummet down the standings.
Their last victory came against Bristol City on 12 December, with the team in the mix for a play-off place following that result.
The gap to the top six is now 12 points, with 17 games remaining in the season.
Next up for the Lancashire club is a home game against relegation rivals Stoke City on 10 February.
Blackburn have not come out of this saga looking good, and losing their manager as a result of issues behind the scenes would be damaging to their reputation.
However, Eustace has the potential to be a solid replacement for Tomasson regardless.
Supporters won’t be happy with the situation, particularly because the Dane is well liked among the fanbase.
But it wouldn’t be the worst outcome for Eustace to arrive as his replacement should Tomason leave, with his track record at Birmingham showing that he’s very capable of coaching a competitive side at a Championship level.
