Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard could be back from his injury as soon as this month’s Serie A match away to Lazio.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. Sky anticipate that the 27-year-old should be back by the match against Lecce before Christmas at the latest.
The question of Pavard’s fitness has become more pertinent than ever for Inter.
That is because of confirmation that both Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries should miss around three weeks of action.
The Dutch duo’s absence will only deepen Inter’s injury crisis in defense, of course.
The return of Alessandro Bastoni will certainly help matters.
But on the right of defense, things are looking almost dire.
Versatile former Manchester United and Torino veteran Matteo Darmian is capable of backing up both Pavard on the right of the back three and Dumfries on the right flank.
But naturally Darmian cannot be in two places at once.
Moreover, at right-wingback, Dumfries’s backup Juan Cuadrado has fitness issues of his own.
For this reason, Inter will be hopeful of Pavard returning as soon as possible.
The former Bayern and Stuttgart defender would certainly improve the depth on the right of the defense.
Pavard playing would also allow Darmian to either move up to right-wingback, or to get a rest.
That could prove to be vital in the coming matches.
So the timing of which match Pavard is able to make his return in may prove key.
According to Sky, there is hope of seeing the Frenchman back against Lazio on December 17.
Then, if Pavard does not return away to the Biancocelesti, returns against Bologna in the Coppa Italia or Lecce in the league would also be possible.
Inter will have to hold on without the Frenchman for some while longer. But it may not be too long.
Pavard has been out with a knee injury that he sustained during a match against Atalanta last month.
However, last week the 27-year-old was able to remove the protective knee brace that he’d been wearing.
