Former AC Milan and Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo believes that the point that Inter will look back on this season with regret is that they failed to go seven points clear at the top of the table when they had the chance.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, Montolivo gave the view that the period in February when they looked on the verge of a double-digit lead at the top of the table with a win over the Rossoneri was the juncture where they failed to win the Scudetto if that is what happens.

Inter have not lost hope in the Serie A title race as they could still overtake their city rivals in top spot tomorrow if the Rossoneri are to slip up and lose to Sassuolo, but they will be aware that this is not the likeliest outcome.

Milan pushed themselves to re-gain an advantage in the derby at the start of February by coming back from a goal down with a late quickfire brace by Olivier Giroud, and Montolivo believes that this was the point where the story of the title was written.

“Thinking back to August, Inter would have signed on for two trophies and being in the Scudetto race on the last day,” he said. “The veil of negativity comes from the ten-point gap that they had in their hands in the February derby, and this will give them the feeling that they threw it away.”

“I think this is the main thing, but Inzaghi’s still done a great job,” he added.
