Legendary former AC Milan, Real Madrid, and England coach Fabio Capello believes that the positive effects of goalkeeper Andre Onana’s performances have been felt through Inter’s entire defense.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after yesterday evening’s Champions League win over Barcelona, Capello highlighted how the Cameroonian’s confident style has seemed to improve the performances of the defenders in front of him.

Onana didn’t have a great deal of work to do against Barcelona in terms of shotstopping, but the 26-year-old was certainly kept busy in terms of imposing himself in his penalty area as the Blaugranas had most of the possession and spent the match trying to break through.

In this respect, Onana proved himself with how he claimed crosses and proactively positioned himself.

The back three had an excellent game to help the team to the clean sheet along with the keeper, and the feeling is that with the goalkeeper clearly delegating certain things to himself the defenders have a clear idea of where they need to be focused.

“Onana made two vital saves and gave the team security and confidence,” Capello said, “which they had perhaps lost a bit of after Handanovic’s last couple performances.”
