The Euros are over, the new season is weeks away and all we have at the moment are pre-season friendlies, transfer rumours and dreams.
But at least we can start looking forward to the next instalment of football’s longest running video game franchise as the first details about what we can expect from FIFA 22 have begun to emerge.
Here’s everything we know so far …
FIFA 22 is slated for release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on 1 October 2021.
Paris Saint-Germain and France star Kylian Mbappé features on the cover for the second year running.
And though the first reveal trailer typically doesn’t give too much away, it’s still worth a watch.
As you can see from the above trailer, EA Sports appear to have put some serious work into motion capture for FIFA 22, and it sounds like some interesting breakthroughs have been made.
Perhaps the biggest one involved them putting motion suits on 22 players and getting them to play out a high intensity 11-a-side match, allowing them to not just capture how individual players move, but team shape as well.
“Xsens suits record every touch, tackle, sprint and duel from all 22 players playing at high intensity for the first time ever, capturing data that powers over 4000 new animations in FIFA 22 to raise the footballing intensity, responsiveness, and physicality of every player in the game,” say EA.
This means that teams should adopt more realistic formations with and without the ball, making defences harder to break down while also opening up new ways to attack. Very cool.
EA say players will also jostle more realistically when competing for aerial balls in FIFA 22, while there will also be a wider variety of ball control animations with what they are calling Composed Ball Control.
The final interesting aspect of FIFA 22’s Hypermotion Technology aims to create a greater level of player humanisation than ever before.
“Powered by Advanced 11v11 Match Capture, new off-ball player animations and ambient behaviour help bring on-pitch characters to life,” say EA.
“See opponents talk, point, and direct each other based on the action, while updated locomotion matches players’ urgency on the pitch to make FIFA more realistic and immersive than ever.”
The shiny new baubles don’t stop there, because EA say they have also revamped the goalkeeping mechanics for FIFA 22, meaning goalies will now position themselves better, make more reliable saves and smarter decisions.
Which is handy, because FIFA 22 will apparently also feature more realistic ball physics than ever before.
“Real-world data imported into FIFA 22 takes the game’s ball physics to a new level of realism,” say EA.
“Tuned parameters including speed, swerve, air drag, air resistance, ground friction, and rolling friction mean every touch, trap, shot, volley, pass, and dribble will look, move, and fly like the real thing.”
Players will also have more control over acceleration with a new feature called Explosive Sprint, which allows you to draw defenders in before bursting away from them at speed, just like cover star Mbappé.
And new attacking tactics will put more control in the hands of the player, enabling them to decide whether they want to play possession football in the final third, a more counter-attacking style, or even a combination of the two.
Full details about this popular game mode are yet to be revealed, but EA have hinted that players will be able to create their own custom club for the first time.
“Live out your football dreams in FIFA 22 Career Mode as you create a club and lead them from relegation candidates to global giants, and enjoy an overhauled Player Career experience that gives you more ways to progress, achieve, and immerse yourself in your Pro’s journey through the game.”
Interesting.
Information regarding FUT is also scarce at the moment, but it looks like a new league of football legends are set to feature in FIFA 22 as part of the FUT Heroes feature.
It sounds like we could be blessed with a range new customisation options, a new player growth system and streamlined social play when it comes to the popular Virtual Pro mode.
The street football mode is back in FIFA 22 but details are limited at the moment, except that EA have hinted the game could feature a range of new street football playgrounds from around the world.
That’s all the official information available so far, but EA will be releasing more details and gameplay footage as we move close to October’s release. Keep your eyes peeled.
