Midfielder Missy Bo Kearns says that there is no reason why Liverpool can’t upset the odds when they travel to Arsenal on Sunday.

The Reds kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture against The Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal go into the game as heavy favourites but midfielder Kearns says that Liverpool can achieve anything over 90 minutes in a one-off game.

“I think it’s a game of football, two teams of 11, and I think every game, anyone can win,” Kearns said when speaking to WSL Full-Time. “It’s not set in stone that they’re going to win.

“I think obviously players on the teamsheet, some teams have better players than others but there’s nothing stopping the bottom of the league beating the top of the league in any league, whether we talk about Sunday league or professional football.

“That’s my attitude towards it, I go into every game thinking that we can win. That’s just the competitive person I am. For me, every team is there to be beaten and there are points available.”

Liverpool are scheduled to feature in two matches in main stadiums in the opening month of the season. The Reds will also host their home Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield. Kearns believes that hosting games in main stadiums is what is needed given the growth in popularity of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

She said “It’s unbelievable, but I think it’s deserved. The following and the recognition that the women’s game is getting now, I think that many people want to go to games. There are enough people to fill out stadiums and to get a good crowd. The stadiums that we’re all based at the majority of the time aren’t big enough for the amount of people that want to come and watch.

“I know some games are on TV, but people want to come live and watch the games now. We’ve seen that in the World Cup, we’ve seen it in the EUROs last summer, the amount of crowds that they were getting, there’s not enough space at some teams’ stadiums in the WSL.

“It’s a great family day out and as players, it’s unbelievable for us. It’s what we’ve dreamed of since we were kids playing at stadiums like the Emirates, Anfield, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Liverpool’s opening game of the new Barclays Women’s Super League season at Arsenal kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
