Erling Haaland’s phenomenal season continued with another hat-trick as Manchester City thrashed Burnley in the FA Cup last weekend.

Haaland’s haul saw him pass 40 goals in all competitions this season and the Norwegian is closing in on the most prolific season from a Premier League player.

Haaland has become just the sixth player to have scored 40+ goals in a season during the Premier League era and we’ve looked back at the players to have achieved the feat.

Harry Kane – 41 goals (2017/18)

Harry Kane broke through the 40-goal barrier during a prolific 2017/18 campaign for Tottenham, one which ranks as the most productive season of the forward’s career to date.

Kane reached 30 goals in the Premier League for the first time as Spurs finished third in the Premier League, but missed out on a third consecutive Golden Boot to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The forward’s haul included back-to-back Premier League hat-tricks against Southampton and Swansea, while he netted a brace on seven occasions during the league campaign.

Kane’s career-best return in the Premier League came alongside a goal-per-game average in the Champions League and FA Cup, as he struck 11 times in 11 appearances across those competitions to reach 41 goals for the season.

At the end of the season, he travelled with England to the World Cup and became just the second Englishman – after Gary Lineker in 1986 – to win the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Andy Cole – 41 goals (1993/94)

Andy Cole embarked on one of the Premier League’s great individual seasons in 1993/94, as the forward fired newly-promoted Newcastle to third in the table.

Cole’s goals had helped Newcastle to promotion the previous season, before Kevin Keegan’s exciting side shone on their return to the top flight. Cole scored a league-leading 34 goals for the Magpies, a return which saw the forward win the Premier League’s Golden Boot and PFA Young Player of the Year award.

His 34 league goals – scored during a 42-game season – remains a joint-Premier League record, while Cole also topped the division’s assist chart to become the first player to lead both metrics in the same season.

He started the following season with nine goals in 18 league appearances, form which persuaded Manchester United to part with a British record £7m for his services in January 1995. Cole won five league titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League among his honours during a decorated spell at Old Trafford.

Erling Haaland – 42 goals* (2022/23)

Erling Haaland’s hat-trick at the weekend saw the forward reach 42 goals in all competitions this season, with just two players in Premier League history having ever scored more in a single campaign.

Haaland’s treble against Burnley took the Norwegian to nine goals across his last three fixtures, having followed a winner at Crystal Palace with FIVE as Manchester City thrashed RB Leipzig 7-0 in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old has set records tumbling this season, in what is already a club-record goalscoring season at Manchester City and the most prolific debut season from an overseas Premier League footballer.

Haaland is now chasing the record for most goals in a 38-game season (32), most goals in any Premier League season (34), and for the most prolific campaign by a Premier League player. Expect each of those to tumble and shortly if he continues his extraordinary record this season, with Haaland having now scored 42 goals in just 37 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 42 goals (2007/08)

Haaland’s haul has already matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s best-ever goal return at Manchester United, set in 2007/08 as the forward inspired the Red Devils to Premier League and Champions League success.

The previous season had been a coming-of-age campaign for Ronaldo, who completed his transformation from exciting talent to genuine star to win the Premier League and a host of individual accolades.

The following campaign saw Ronaldo take his game up another level, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side returned to the top of European football. Ronaldo’s 31 league goals were a then-record for a 38-game Premier League season, while he scored eight goals – including one in the final – as United won the Champions League in Moscow.

He retained the PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards won the previous season, while adding a first Premier League Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe. It was also the first year that Ronaldo was crowned the world’s finest footballer, as the Portugal international claimed a maiden Ballon d’Or.

Mohamed Salah – 44 goals (2017/18)

Mohamed Salah returned to the Premier League at Liverpool ahead of the 2017/18 season, with doubts surrounding the forward after an underwhelming spell at Chelsea. Those doubts were emphatically silenced during a spectacular first season at Anfield.

The Egyptian smashed several records, including for the most Premier League goals scored (32) in a 38-game season. Alongside the division’s Golden Boot, his performances earned Salah the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

Salah was also a prolific presence in Europe as Liverpool reached the 2018 Champions League Final. He scored 11 goals in the competition, as club’s forward line of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane starred during a memorable run to the decider.

Salah ended the season with 44 goals in all competitions, the second-highest scoring campaign by a Liverpool player after Ian Rush (47 goals – 1983/84). It also remains the joint-highest scoring individual season by a Premier League player.

Ruud van Nistelrooy – 44 goals (2002/03)

Ruud van Nistelrooy shares the current record alongside Salah, though for how long remains to be seen as Haaland hurtles towards a new benchmark.

Van Nistelrooy was a prolific presence across five seasons at Manchester United, a period which saw the forward score 150 goals in just 215 appearances across all competitions. The Dutchman’s move to Manchester was delayed due to a serious knee injury, but the club’s patience proved justified as Van Nistelrooy tormented defences at home and in Europe.

He finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer on three occasions with the Red Devils, with his best campaign coming during the 2002/03 season. Van Nistelrooy scored 25 league goals as Manchester United won the Premier League, scoring in each of the club’s final eight games to edge out old rival Thierry Henry for the Golden Boot.

He added a further 14 goals in just 11 appearances in Europe as United reached the Champions League quarter-finals, a return which saw Van Nistelrooy crowned as UEFA’s best forward.
