Crystal Palace secured their second trophy in as many competitive matches after successfully beating Premier League champions Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, and Oliver Glasner has highlighted the resilience of his players and the commitment from the Crystal Palace fanbase.

“Their first shot was the first goal, but the reaction was great because we played forward. Most of the time, we played in their half,” the Palace boss said. “Then we go 2-1 down. At half-time, we said to stick to our plan and keep calm.

“We knew that we would get a few chances and then we scored from it, the players were confident and had the belief – that’s what I’m really pleased with the performance today,” he added.

Glasner also revealed how he motivated his players before leaving for Wembley.

“We showed the players a video before we went to Wembley about the happiness of the fans, this is what we call the emotional reward: this feeling, you can’t buy with any money in the world,” he said.

“Our fans deserved it, they were supporting us all the way even when we were down, they were pushing the team forward.”

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was pivotal in the penalty shootout, saving two strikes from 12 yards in a similar fashion to Palace’s FA Cup victory. For him, Glasner was unsurprisingly full of praise.

“We know Dean’s a great goalkeeper,” the Austrian said. “The day before, he was with the goalkeeping coach and went through all the penalty-takers from Liverpool, so he was well prepared.”

Justin Devenny scored the decisive penalty to seal Palace’s first ever Community Shield, being rewarded for his bravery by his manager.

“I am delighted that Justin took the decisive penalty at 21-years-old. We were looking for a fifth penalty taker and Justin said ‘I’ll take it’,” Glasner revealed.

“It takes a lot of confidence and I said ‘okay it’s you’ and he showed it, this is how I want us to be. Take responsibility, never be scared or worried that you can make a mistake because this is football.”

Amid to their hearing on if they will compete in European football this season, Glasner was asked if he would swap the trophy for a spot in the Europa League next season, and he had a clear answer.

“No, we will accept what happens,” he said.

The Eagles boss also expanded on how the win can provide confidence for his team, saying: “I think the performance gives us a lot of confidence, we had a very good preseason. We can also see we are not at the top level.

“We still need to build up resilience physically, mentally the players were top. You need a rhythm of games and training over weeks and months – but being competitive against the champions gives you confidence,” he added.

Finally, Glasner spoke about the importance of the Crystal Palace fans.

“We have a great connection between the team, the club and our fans,” he said. “Every Crystal Palace fan is proud to be a Crystal Palace fan. Every player is very proud to wear the Eagle shirt and play for our fans.

“We never promise that we can win a game, but what they can appreciate is the team will always give one-hundred percent for the Eagle. This is a foundation of our success.”

Crystal Palace will discover their European fate on Monday August 11th before kicking off their Premier League campaign away against Chelsea on Sunday August 17th.
