Everton are yet to have made contact with Derby County boss Wayne Rooney over their vacant managerial position, as per a recent report by Football Insider.

The Toffees are currently scouring the managerial market for a replacement for Rafa Benitez after the Spaniard was sacked yesterday after a terrible run of form.

Since then Rooney has emerged as one of the leading favourites for the role due to his past playing career for the Goodison Park side and it appears that he would find the job hard to turn down if he was offered it.

However it has been revealed today that the Premier League side are yet to have made contract with their former striker, meaning that there could be some further developments later on this week.

The 36-year-old has done a brilliant job with Derby since taking on the role and has led them well through some very difficult situations.

Everton are however said to be keeping their options open as they also run the rule over some more experienced managerial options.

The Verdict

Make no mistake about it, Derby will have anticipated this link being made as soon as Benitez was jettisoned from his position and it is fair to assume that this rumour won’t go away until a new man is appointed at Goodison Park.

Rooney will always be linked with a return to Everton due to the history he has with the club but it would be tough for him to leave Derby given the current situation that they find themselves in.

He has to take into account that it would be hard for the Rams to replace him at this stage of the season, whilst he should also acknowledge that there will probably be other chances to take the Everton job later on in his career.

However it is sure to be an interesting couple of weeks, with this saga only just beginning.
