Phil Jagielka wasn’t even supposed to play for Everton on Sunday but with Michael Keane forced to withdraw from the squad with illness, the veteran defender was given a surprise start.
And after 10 minutes at Goodison Park, he poked home from close range to give the Toffees a surprise lead against Arsenal.
At 36 years and 233 days, Jagielka becomes the oldest player to score a Premier League goal this season, and the first 36-year-old to do so.
The goal was his first since April 2017 and came on his first Goodison Park start since May 2018.
And it also happened to be Everton’s 800th Premier League home goal.
Twitter was mightily impressed with the old boy …
Phil Jagielka bagged a goal against us you know 😂 why do we allow the most WASHED guys to score ffs–
