Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has admitted that he still bears the scars of social media criticism he received from Sheffield United fans.
The 24-year-old, who came up through the ranks at the Blades, was still a teenager when he moved to Goodison Park in a £1.5m deal in 2016.
It was a harsh lesson about the fickle nature of the game for the Steel City native.
“I experienced it at Sheffield United, where there were rumours that Everton were coming in for me and I was going there for a million pounds,” he told the Super 6 show on Sky Sports.
“At that time, I am a kid who uses social media like Twitter. Sheffield United fans were saying they would walk and carry me there, wanting me to go.
“As a boyhood Sheffield United fan, that still cuts me deep. That’s now how I envisioned my Sheffield United career going.”
The Yorkshire side’s loss has been the Toffees’ gain, with Calvert-Lewin developing into one of the top forwards in the Premier League.
He is currently away on international duty with England, and has already notched four goals in just six senior appearances for the Three Lions.
