Everton and Newcaslte played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. The visitors were the more controlling side and should have won the game after James Tarkowski dragged Sandro Tonali down in the box midway through the first half.
It was a clear penalty kick and, following a VAR intervention, the visitors had the opportunity to go ahead. Newcastle were awarded the spot kick but Anthony Gordon’s effort was kept out by a fabulous save from Jordan Pickford.
Gordon was a threa throughout and made life hard for his old club with his pace and skill at the top of the match. If truth it was an even contest.
Both managers attempted to change the momentum with substitutes from the bench but they had little effect and neither team could press on to win.

69 mins: The Everton fans are understandably outraged by that decision but it seems fair on review. The referee saw it in real time and didn’t give a penalty anyway.

66 mins: Dwight McNeil recovers the ball off Sandro Tonali and slides the ball into the box for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
He shoots and forces a low save out of Nick Pope who palms the ball back into play. Calvet-Lewin looks for another shot but Dan Burn leans across him and the striker gets tangled up.
Everton want a penalty but VAR shows that Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn’s legs so it’s adjudged not to be a spot kick.
