Premier League side Everton are set to make a ‘formal bid’ for Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the transfer deadline, according to reports.

The Sweden international has been in brilliant form for the Sky Blues over the last couple of seasons after joining permanently from Brighton for a reported fee of just over £1m.

Gyokeres has contributed 29 goals and nine assists in the Championship for Coventry in 73 appearances in the last two seasons.

And that form has seen admiring glances from a number of clubs at a higher level but Coventry’s resolve could now be tested with a proper bid.

When asked if the Coventry hierarchy have moved to assure him that Gyokeres won’t be sold in January, Sky Blues boss Mark Robins replied earlier this month: “I don’t need any reassurance.”

On whether there were any bids for Gyokeres or other players, Robins added: “No. And we haven’t had bids for anyone. And they’re not welcome. And there won’t be anyone (of note) leaving this January.”

But now Football Insider claim that Everton ‘are in talks to sign’ over a deal to sign Gyokeres ‘ahead of the transfer cut-off’ as they look to make ‘two attacking signings in the final days of the window’.

Everton now have some money to spend after selling Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United in a deal worth £45m and the report claims ‘around half of that cash will be ploughed straight into signing reinforcements’.

The report adds:

‘Everton believe around £15m could be enough to prise Gyokeres from Coventry and they are in discussions over the fee with the Championship side, with a formal bid lined up. ‘The relegation-threatened Premier League club are now working round-the-clock to bring in two forwards capable of slotting straight into the team. ‘They want an orthodox centre-forward who can spearhead the attack as well as a pacy wide player.’

And Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad claim that PSV Eindhoven are attempting to sign Thorgan Hazard from Borussia Dortmund but that Everton want to ‘hijack the deal’ before the deadline.

Belgium outlet La Dernière Heure also back this up with the newspaper insisting that Everton are on the ‘prowl’ for Hazard and that they are keen on signing him this month.

Gordon, who left Everton to join Newcastle on Sunday, revealed why he chose to sign for the Magpies.

“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon told NUFC TV.

“I think the fan-base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.”
