Everton: Paul Brown has his say over Moise Kean

Everton have conducted several questionable pieces of business in the transfer market in recent years, but one player has arguably caused more controversy than all the others.

What’s the story?

In August 2019, the Toffees splashed out £25.1m on a 19-year-old Moise Kean despite the striker having played just 21 games in all competitions for boyhood club Juventus.

Things didn’t work out for the Italy international at Goodison Park, and he started just six Premier League games before re-joining the Old Lady on a two-year loan with an obligation to buy last summer, ending his short and unhappy marriage with Everton.

According to Transfermarkt, Kean is the Blues’ ninth most expensive signing in their history, and journalist Paul Brown has questioned whether director of football Marcel Brands should have ever sanctioned the transfer.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “You can criticise him for the Moise Kean transfer, although at the time, everyone was praising that because it looked like a great coup for Everton to get this guy.

“It hasn’t worked, but how much of that is Marcel Brands’ fault, how much of that is the club, the manager that Moise Kean worked under and how much of that is the player’s fault is up for debate.”

Yes, definitely!

Fans surely fuming

Kean returned to Turin in the previous window on an initial 24-month loan deal, although Juve have an obligation to buy the 21-year-old for 28m euros (£24m) in the summer of 2023, in a deal that includes bonuses of up to 3m euros (£2.5m).

His move back to the Serie A giants comes after he showed his true potential with Paris Saint-Germain last term, bagging 19 goals in 45 appearances for the capital club, winning the French Cup along the way.

However, things never worked out for the exciting attacker at Everton. He played twice this season under new manager Rafael Benitez and was sent off in the Carabao Cup second-round win over Huddersfield in what turned out to be his final appearance for the club.

What year did Everton wear this home strip?

That condemned Kean to a measly tally of just four goals and two assists in 39 games in all competitions for the Toffees, ensuring he will be remembered as one of the club’s biggest mistakes in the transfer market.

However, the fact he then went on to score 17 goals for PSG last term only exacerbates how poorly managed he’s been by the club’s hierarchy.

The whole debacle was handled poorly by Brands, and the Everton fans will surely be fuming with the club’s chief for getting another acquisition horribly wrong.
