Premier League side Everton have recently made a move to try and sign Blackpool captain Chris Maxwell, according to LancsLive.

However, a move to the Toffees looks unlikely currently for the goalkeeper with a deal stalled and Frank Lampard exploring other options as his back-ups to Jordan Pickford.

Maxwell, who has reportedly been coaching with Blackpool’s under-16’s this past season as well as playing, was the first-choice stopper of Neil Critchley at Bloomfield Road in 2020-21, playing 46 times as the Seasiders won the League One play-offs.

The 2021-22 season though saw Maxwell plagued by injuries, restricting his Championship league appearances to just 21 as Daniel Grimshaw assumed the role of starting stopper for the Tangerines.

Despite losing his starting role, Maxwell was being eyed up by Everton as a third-choice goalkeeper for next season, but that is now up in the air.

Everton could now look to extend the contract of experienced Bosnia international Asmir Begovic by a year, whilst Joao Virginia will return from his loan at Portuguese giants Sporting and potentially stick around at Goodison Park as Pickford’s understudy.

The Verdict

Premier League clubs are always on the lookout for backup goalkeepers, but they are normally players that have top flight experience and are out of contract.

Maxwell does not tick either of those boxes, hence the surprise in the Toffees being interested.

For now though, it looks like Maxwell will be staying at Blackpool, but there’s time for the Merseyside outfit to change their minds again.
