Everton are reportedly on the verge of securing the signing of versatile England international Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais, with the player said to be keen on a return to the Premier League.
The move would represent a key addition to Everton’s summer transfer window as manager David Moyes looks to reshape a squad short on depth and experience, particularly in defence and midfield.
According to French outlet L’Équipe, Maitland-Niles is “nostalgic” about English football and open to a return, with Everton showing strong interest amid Lyon’s financial constraints.
The French club is thought to be willing to offload players this summer to ease budgetary pressures, and Maitland-Niles—despite having two years left on his current contract—is among those who could be moved on.
Everton face particular issues at right-back following injuries to Jarrad Branthwaite and the limited availability of central defenders Michael Keane and James Tarkowski.
Maitland-Niles’ ability to play both as a full-back and a central midfielder makes him a highly practical target for Moyes, who is prioritising versatility and Premier League experience in his recruitment.
During the 2024/25 season, the 27-year-old made 43 appearances for Lyon, registering eight goal contributions while predominantly deployed at right-back. His performances in France have been solid, and he remains a player well regarded for his composure, athleticism, and tactical intelligence.
Everton had previously missed out on several of their top targets this window, and the pursuit of Maitland-Niles signals a shift toward proven, adaptable players who can offer consistency and immediate impact.
Should the deal be finalised, pending medicals and personal terms, Maitland-Niles would bring much-needed quality and flexibility to the Toffees’ ranks, with his Premier League pedigree a welcome boost ahead of what promises to be another challenging campaign at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
