Everton are among a number of Premier League clubs who are reportedly tracking the progress of Olympiacos defender Pape Abou Cisse ahead of a potential move.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, Rafa Benitez’s charges are one of three English top-flight clubs keeping a close eye on how the 26-year-old develops, with Liverpool and Arsenal also credited with an interest.

The report states: “Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton sent scouts to Istanbul for Olympiacos’ Europa League clash with Fenerbahce – seeing Cisse keep a clean sheet as the visitors won 3-0 to seize control of Group D.”

However, it added that Jurgen Klopp’s charges are currently leading the race for Cisse’s signature, so Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands may need to move quickly in order to secure his transfer target.

Would Abou Cisse be a good signing?

Rafa Benitez would love him

The Senegal international has had an impressive rise in recent years since departing boyhood club AS Pikine back in January 2015, joining AC Ajaccio in the second tier of French football. During his 18 month spell at the Stade François Coty, Cisse impressed and duly earned a £630,000 move to Greek giants Olympiacos.

After enjoying loan moves back to France with Ajaccio and Saint-Etienne, Cisse has become a pivotal cog for the Piraeus club and is set to play a key role in the Greek champions’ title defence.

What year did Everton wear this home strip?

2003/04 2001/02 2004/05

So far this season, the 6 foot 6 monster has featured in every fixture for Olympiacos, taking his tally to an impressive 12 goals in 105 appearances, and he also secured a domestic double last season. That shows how he can make an impact in both penalty boxes and play his part in a winning team.

With current Everton centre-back Yerry Mina continuing to be linked with a move to Serie A, Benitez would surely love to add Cisse to his ranks over the coming months if the Colombian is tempted away.

After netting against Arsenal in the Europa League last 32 during the 2019/20 campaign and featuring against Wolves in the following round, the Senegal defender has already had a taste of what it’s like to play against English opposition.

Only time will tell whether or not Cisse is playing against Premier League opponents on a regular basis in the near future, although Goodison Park could be the ideal destination for him to do exactly that, especially if Mina moves on.
