Forest Green Rovers are set to name Duncan Ferguson as their new manager, a report from The Times has claimed.

The League One side are looking for a new manager after sacking Ian Burchnall on Wednesday, with the club bottom of the third-tier standings, four points from safety.

However, it now seems as though the club are set to move quickly to find a replacement for the 39-year-old at New Lawn.

According to this latest update, Ferguson is now poised to be named as the club’s new manager, in what will be the 51-year-old’s first permanent managerial role.

Ferguson has previously had two spells in caretaker charge of Everton – for whom he made 273 appearances and scored 72 goals as a player – before winning one and drawing three of his five games in interim charge of the club, during a long spell on the coaching staff at Goodison Park.

If confirmed, Ferguson’s first game in charge of Forest Green could come on Saturday afternoon, when they make the trip to the New Meadow to face Shrewsbury Town.

The Verdict

As is always the case, the club are taking something of a risk inn appointing a manager who has never had any full time experience in such a role before.

However, Ferguson has generally impressed when he has stepped in to what have been some challenging situations at Everton, and that experience could serve him well here.

Indeed, his profile and connections within the game may also open up a few doors for Forest Green when it comes to recruitment, meaning this could prove to be a smart move from the League One strugglers.
