Everton have got a ‘better chance’ of signing Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha than Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The 23-year-old has been linked with an imminent exit from the La Liga giants and Goodison Park has been outlined as a potential landing spot for him ahead of the winter window.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations between Wolves and Atletico are ‘still ongoing’ as both sides look to find a ‘full agreement on all details’.

The transfer expert has also stated that ‘there are other clubs’ interested in the Brazil international, though, meaning he is not going to be short of potential suitors in January.

90min have claimed that Cunha is free to leave the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and that Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton have all ‘expressed an interest’ in signing him.

It’s believed that the versatile striker’s departure is expected to be an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent move.

What has Phillips said about Cunha?

When asked by GiveMeSport if he believed a move to Merseyside would be more appealing than one to Wolves for Cunha, Phillips was in no doubt that it would be.

He said: “Oh, for sure. Everton have got a good history as a club anyway, and I think what’s more important is Frank Lampard’s pulling power.

“If a player is picking between Everton and Wolves, I think Lampard is going to be the standout decision-maker for any player really. We saw it at Chelsea, he single-handedly got players to sign for the club like Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz just with his influence.

“So, I think he can use that again at Everton, especially for a player like Cunha. I think they’ve got a better chance of signing him than Wolves.”

Would Cunha be a good signing?

Cunha, who earns £65,000-per-week, made his name at Hertha Berlin, registering 13 goals and 10 assists in 40 appearances, earning himself a move to Atleti as a result.

seven occasions in 54 outings, setting up eight further strikes for his teammates.

As per FBref, Cunha has still put up some impressive underlying numbers, though, ranking in the 99th percentile for blocks, and 95th for tackles and interceptions amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Cunha, who is valued at £15 million, has also ranked in the 84th percentile for expected assists and shot-creating actions, indicating he is a goal threat as well as a hard-working striker.
