Frank Lampard secured his first Premier League victory as Everton manager on Saturday.
Having suffered a gut-wrenching 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United on his league bow as Toffees boss earlier in the week, Lampard must have had everything crossed for a course-correcting triumph.
And that’s exactly what his new side achieved at Goodison Park with goals from Seamus Coleman, Michael Keane and Anthony Gordon ensuring that they swept aside Leeds United in a 3-0 win.
Given the emphatic nature of the victory, it’s not surprising that Lampard’s statement of intent featured highly on the Match of the Day running order with only Norwich City vs Manchester City being analysed beforehand.
As such, Jermaine Jenas and Danny Murphy had ample time to analyse Everton’s performance in the BBC studio with Gary Lineker once again pulling the strings as the master of ceremonies.
And although it was the compliments raining in for the Toffees that will have caught Everton fans’ eyes the most, some of the committed viewers watching the entire programme will have noticed exactly how Lineker signed off.
Whether it’s mocking Alan Shearer’s FA Cup record or making terrible puns on Twitter, the BBC stalwart loves a good joke and he just couldn’t resist making a gag out of the recent internet craze surrounding Lampard’s interviews.
It’s hard to traverse Twitter for very long these days without stumbling upon a meme about the way in which Lampard often transitions from joking about something to be being deadly serious in just a few seconds.
Screenshots of Lampard donning a cheeky smile and then looking as though he’s just found out Everton have been relegated have become something of a staple for online jokers.
And it’s most certainly pervading the mainstream media because not only did the FA Cup’s official Twitter account crack a joke about it recently, but now Lineker has jumped on board during a major broadcast.
Some may find it hysterical, others might think it borders on disrespectful and plenty will fall somewhere in between, but it’s quite the watch regardless of where you stand and you can check it out down below:
Poor Lampard must feel so self-conscious during interviews these days!
Obviously, Lineker is only making a light-hearted reference to an ultimately inconsequential habit that no doubt plenty of other managers do, but for which Lampard has been inordinately teased over online.
Besides, we wouldn’t be human if we said that we hadn’t been tickled by the odd meme and video of ‘Lampardian transitions’ during our scrolls through the wild and wacky word of social media.
And no doubt the man himself would be happy to take the banter on the chin.
It seems inevitable that someone will directly ask Lampard about the online craze sooner rather than later in what would surely be the perfect set-up for him to respond in the best way that he knows how.
I mean, just imagine if he reacted to Lampardian transitions with a Lampard transition! But no, seriously, we love you, Frank.
