Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is still interested in selling the club despite his public denial, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Toffees need investment for their new £500 million Bramley-Moore Dock stadium and could see Moshiri relinquish ownership of the Merseyside club.

Who currently owns the football club?

Businessman Farhad Moshiri made his first foray into football as part of the Red and White Holdings consortium with Alisher Usmanov, who in 2007 bought a 14.7% share in Arsenal off former club vice-chairman David Dein. That quickly increased to 21% and by 2012 the pair had a 29.72% stake in the North London side.

However, in February 2016, Moshiri sold his stake in Arsenal to Usmanov to raise the capital needed to launch a takeover of Everton. In February the club announced Moshiri’s 49.9% purchase, reportedly paying £200 million to invest in the Toffees.

That stake was increased further at the start of 2022, when the 67-year-old completed a deal to see his shareholding upped to 94%.

What does Paul Brown say about the Everton ownership?

While Farhad Moshiri has gone public to say the club is not for sale, Paul Brown believes there is still interest in moving the club on.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “Despite his public comments that the club is not for sale, Moshiri is clearly interested in selling Everton.”

What is the latest on any new investment in Everton?

Since his arrival at Goodison Park Moshiri has spent over £500m in transfers, for very little reward, and has seen losses of £372 million over the last year three years.

In July, amid speculation on a sale of the club, Moshiri released a statement where he denied any desire to sell the club and reiterated his ambitions for Everton.

He said: “There has been much talk of investment in our football club recently – even takeovers – but I want to clarify that there is no ‘for sale’ sign currently hanging outside Everton Football Club.

It will always be pragmatic to explore all potential investment opportunities and, as I have been transparent about, I am focused on completing the financing for our fantastic new stadium as well as strengthening the playing squad and that might include a minority investment. That will continue.

But I want to reassure all of you that Everton Football Club is not for sale.”

However, it is believed that the Iranian-born British businessman has been in secret talks with Hollywood movie-makers Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman about a £250 million investment in the club, which is valued at around £800 million. While another report says there has also been discussions with US businessman Maciek Kaminski according to the Financial Times.

A further report also states that Moshiri needs to sell the club or seek further investment to commit to the full £500 million it will take to complete Everton’s new 52,888-seater stadium.
