We’re closing in on the conclusion of the FA Women’s Super League season and there were five big matches scheduled on Sunday.
Here is what went down.
Scorers: Turner 85′, Finnigan 90+1′; Ale 5′, Green 85′
Tottenham’s winless run continues after Everton fought back for a draw in stunning fashion.
Right from kick-off, it was seemingly one-way traffic at Walton Hall Park.
And the quick start worked in Spurs’ favour after Asmita Ale’s run into the box ended with her finding the net after just five minutes.
The visitors didn’t slow down either, ramping up their efforts to try and find a second while a struggling Everton didn’t have a shot on target until after the 80-minute mark despite 55% possession.
Tottenham continued with their pressure in the second half but couldn’t find their scoring touch despite 23 attempts compared to 10 for the hosts and they will be frustrated with themselves for not putting the game away.
A late Danielle Turner goal made things 1-1 but it was Spurs ahead again seconds later thanks to Josie Green.
But then Megan Finnigan’s 91st-minute header ensured both sides split the points as things ended 2-2.
The result means Spurs sit fifth while 10th place Everton pick up a crucial point in the race to avoid relegation.
Scorers: Harder (PEN) 71′
Following Arsenal’s earlier win, the pressure was on leaders Chelsea and they did just enough to down Birmingham City 1-0.
But during most of the match Emma Hayes’ side didn’t work their usual magic.
Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder and Jessie Fleming, in particular, struggled to create anything worthwhile up in the attack.
Credit must be given to the hosts though after they put in a determined performance to limit Chelsea’s influence and at times kept Ann-Katrin Berger on her toes.
It took until over the hour mark for the champions to have their first shot on target but a slight slip up from Birmingham handed them a lifeline.
After a handball in the box Pernille Harder stepped up to the spot and slotted home the eventual winner to save her side from blushing and crush the visitors.
The result means Chelsea hold a four-point lead at the top while Birmingham City sit bottom of the table and continue their race to avoid relegation.
Scorers: Miedema 9′, 13′, Corsie (OG) 52′, Mead 61′, Wubben-Moy 66′, Blackstenius 83′, Parris (PEN) 90′
Arsenal kept pace with Chelsea in the title race after smashing seven past Aston Villa.
The match couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the Gunners as Vivianne Miedema scored a brace in the opening 15 minutes which signaled this could be a thrashing.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, struggled to maintain possession and were instead on the back foot but did well to keep the scoreline down in the first half.
However, Arsenal’s relentless pressure continued after the break and they went on to add more misery on the visitors.
Rachel Corsie put the ball into her own net before Mead made the most of another chance and Lotte Wubben-Moy added a fifth.
Then the attacking power off the bench also joined in on the action as Stina Blackstenius and Nikita Parris wrapped up a 7-0 win.
Arsenal sit four points back of leaders Chelsea with a game in hand while Villa are ninth.
Scorers: N/A
Leicester City and Reading were forced to split the points following a 0-0 draw at King Power Stadium.
It was a very nervy opening half as both sides had a handful of attempts to break the deadlock.
The Foxes came closest when Shannon O’Brien’s driving run into the box ended with her shot hitting the outside of the post before Reading had their own chance when Deanna Cooper’s header went straight into Demi Lambourne’s arms.
Deadlocked heading into the second half, both clubs attempted to ramp up their efforts but their lack of ability to put shots on target continued to be an issue. Out of a combined 25 attempts, only five hit the target.
There were two dramatic moments at the end though, with Leicester hitting the woodwork again through Natasha Flint and Justine Vanhaevermaet’s effort falling short in the 95th minute.
In the end, the result means 11th place Leicester pick up a key point in their race to avoid relegation and Reading sit eighth.
Scorers: Thomas 12′, Fisk (OG) 20′, Galton 49′
Manchester United are back up to third in the table after a comfortable victory over West Ham.
The hosts went in front when Martha Thomas headed home from close range after Leah Galton’s cross.
And it was soon 2-0 thanks to an own goal from Grace Fisk.
Galton then got on the scoresheet when she turned in a cross at the back post early in the second half.
