Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is expected to be the subject of a Manchester United bid ‘pretty soon’ and he will have to consider the switch after the recent struggles at Goodison Park, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

While Toffees boss Frank Lampard spent more than £70million strengthening his squad during the summer window, he may have to turn his attentions towards attempting to hold onto one of his key men in January.

What’s the latest news involving Pickford?

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are considering a move for Pickford as boss Erik ten Hag continues to scour the market for a new first choice shot-stopper.

The report suggests the Red Devils are weighing up whether to extend David De Gea’s stay at Old Trafford after entering the final 12 months of his £375,000-per-week contract, although the agreement could be lengthened by a further year.

But Manchester United are not the only Premier League club to have shown an interest in Pickford as Tottenham Hotspur also enquired about his availability during the summer.

The 28-year-old did not link up with the England squad for the international break after Everton confirmed he suffered a thigh injury during the Merseyside derby with Liverpool.

It is understood that a scan revealed the damage is not serious but he was still forced to miss the clash with West Ham United last month.

What has Dean Jones said about Pickford?

Jones believes Pickford is focused on his career at Everton and he is not necessarily seeking a move away from Merseyside.

However, the journalist feels the goalkeeper may be forced into seriously contemplating a switch to Manchester United if his current employers remain at the wrong end of the table.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s a tough one because I genuinely don’t think there are many clubs he would want to leave Everton for. But if they continue at the bottom end of the Premier League, he’s going to have to consider it.

“We saw, when they were at risk of relegation last season, Tottenham were being linked with him. I just don’t think he can stay at Everton for that much longer if they continue to struggle and a genuine offer lands.

“Is he the type of goalkeeper that ten Hag ideally wants? We will have to wait and see. But I do think we’re entering a time when Everton probably will get an offer pretty soon.”

Is Pickford likely to leave Everton in January?

Although Pickford has entered the final two years of his £110,000-per-week contract at Everton, supporters should not be fearing a mid-season departure.

Having joined for a then-club record fee of £30million from Sunderland five years ago, the custodian has gone on to become a key man.

Pickford has made more than 200 appearances and racked up 55 clean sheets along the way, so Lampard will be desperate to retain his services.

The 45-cap England international has not agitated for a Goodison Park exit and, ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, it is unlikely his stance will change.
