Everton are considering Roberto Martinez as a replacement for Rafael Benitez, according to the Sun.

Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson are also top contenders for the manager’s role at Goodison Park.

Martinez was dismissed by the Toffees in May 2016 after remaining at the helm of affairs for three years.

He is currently the head coach of the Belgium national side, who will play at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

This could prevent him from taking the Everton job on a full-time basis now.

Benitez, who took over in June, was axed after the humiliating 2-1 loss at Norwich City on Saturday.

That defeat left the Blues 16th in the Premier League table, just six points above the drop zone.

Rooney is reportedly another leading contender to be the next Everton boss, with some board members keen to appoint him.

The ex-Manchester United star is interested in taking the job at his former club.

The 36-year-old has worked wonders at Derby County, despite having no budget and suffering a 21-point deduction for financial mismanagement.

Ferguson is set to be appointed as the caretaker manager while he is also being considered for the job on a permanent basis.

Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and Nuno Espirito Santo are also said to be candidates.
