Lampard said, "It's a tough game to start the season. It's nice to be at home in front of their home fans. It's nice to have a relative clean slate at the start of the season. I never felt that we had that. Chelsea were always going to be a difficult opponent because of the quality of thee squad, the quality of the manager. We just have to take it as that.

"I'm pleased with the players we've brought in because that's what we're here for. We're here to assess the squad and make the right decisions and as coach I'm a big part of that decision making process. James (Tarkowski) we got early and he's already behind the scenes and on the pitch and showed a lot of the qualities I expected from him.

"We finished where we were for a reason. We've lost Richarlison as a big player for us. It's important we keep a calm balance about where we want to get to and assess where we are once the window shuts and where we cant to be and be realistic about that. The job is not for me to predict too far into the future but concentrate on Chelsea, Aston Villa and then Nottingham Forest."
