João Pedro Sousa has left Everton in order to take on a senior coaching role in Portugal, the club have confirmed.
The 47-year-old was appointed 12 months ago as assistant manager to Marco Silva when he landed the top job at Goodison Park.
However, Everton have announced that he has exited after one season in order to become head coach of Portuguese outfit Famalicāo on a two-year deal.
They are coming off the back of a season in which they finished second in Portugal’s second tier, gaining promotion.
“Everton can confirm that João Pedro Sousa has left to become the new head coach of Famalicaão,” read a brief Everton statement.
“The club would like to thank João for his service and wish him all the best for the future.”
Los Famalicenses will compete in Portugal’s top tier next season under Sousa’s guidance, for just the seventh season in their history.
The move brings to an end the long association between Toffees boss Silva and his right hand man.
In addition to playing together at Trofense in the 1990s, they were part of the same coaching staff at Sporting CP, Olympiacos, Hull City and Watford.
