Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is facing a “really big moment” at Goodison Park, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £72,000 per-week ace hasn’t played a single minute this season but could return for the trip to Southampton on Saturday.

What’s the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

Since scoring a career-best 21 goals under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti in the 2020-2021 season, it’s been a tough old ride for Calvert-Lewin.

Last term, the England international was restricted to only 15 Premier League starts, part of just 18 appearances in all competitions, which saw him score just five goals.

Calvert-Lewin did chip in with some crucial strikes to help Everton avoid relegation.

But the 25-year-old suffered a knee problem ahead of the Toffees’ season-opener against Chelsea, which has kept him out for almost two months and forced him to miss every game this term.

According to the Liverpool Echo, though, the former Sheffield United striker could make his first outing of the campaign at Southampton this weekend.

The report claims that Everton are being ‘cautious’ due to Calvert-Lewin’s injury history, but he’s still on course to play some part at St Mary’s.

What did Jones say about Calvert-Lewin?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s a really big moment for Calvert-Lewin.

“He’s missed something like 24 games over the past year or so with injuries. He’s only scored a couple of goals since Lampard actually arrived at Everton, so Lampard needs him to get fit and then to stay fit.

“But at the same time, he’s going have to be really careful about how he manages his game-time and doesn’t risk a setback because that would be truly gutting for Everton and the player.”

Could Calvert-Lewin start against Southampton?

Everton are taking a cautious approach with Calvert-Lewin and given how much football he’s missed over the last 14 months, it’s hardly a surprise.

Not only that, but the Toffees recorded their first win of the season against West Ham before the international break, so Frank Lampard is therefore unlikely to change a winning team, especially after Neal Maupay, the man deputising for Calvert-Lewin, scored the winner.

As a result, Lampard is likely to name Calvert-Lewin on the bench and then give him an opportunity to make a difference in the latter stages of the game.
