From Mohamed Salah to Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema, we round up the top scorers in Europe’s top-five divisions for the 2021/22 season.
Going into March’s international break, the top-scorer races across the best leagues in European football are heating up.
Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah is on the verge of claiming his first Premier League Golden Boot since the 2018/19 season and his third overall since moving to Anfield in 2017.
The 29-year-old Egyptian is the only player in England’s top-flight to have hit double digits for both goals and assists this season.
He has tallied 20 goals and ten assists from 27 league appearances, at least seven more than any other player in the competition.
According to the Premier League top scorers list, Salah’s closest follower is Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min, who has 13 goals under his belt, the same as Liverpool’s Diogo Jota.
With only nine rounds of fixtures left to play, it would take something special for the abovementioned duo to leapfrog the ex-Chelsea flop in the scoring charts.
Bayern Munich’s long-serving stalwart Robert Lewandowski is seemingly waltzing away with his fifth Bundesliga top scorer award on the trot.
Following a record-breaking 2020/21 season where he shattered Gerd Muller’s record for the number of goals scored in a single Bundesliga campaign (41), the Pole has continued to deliver the goods this term.
Lewandowski has lived up to his nickname ‘LewnGOALski,’ racking up 31 goals from just 27 league outings to move 11 clear from second-placed Patrik Schick of Bayer Leverkusen.
The 33-year-old has been an absolute monster in 2021/22, with no other player from Europe’s top-five leagues managing to get close to his staggering figures.
Unlike the Bundesliga, the top-scorer race in Serie A will go down to the wire as Lazio’s Ciro Immobile and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic go head-to-head for the coveted Capocannoniere award.
Both players have scored 21 goals apiece, while Tammy Abraham of Roma sits third in the Serie A scoring chart with 15 to his name.
Immobile has won the award twice, while at Torino and Lazio, respectively, last claiming the flattering prize in 2019/20, where he equalled the all-time high 36 goals scored in a single Serie A season.
Meanwhile, Vlahovic, who enjoyed a stellar first half of the season at Fiorentina, has maintained his predatory form at Juventus as he seeks his first-ever Capocannoniere award.
Things are pretty straightforward when the top-scorer race in La Liga is concerned, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema running away with his maiden award.
The veteran Frenchman has flourished at the Santiago Bernabeu in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, soaking up the limelight as Los Blancos’ headline performer.
Benzema is set to reap the rewards of his astonishing performances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as he tops the scoring charts in Spain’s top-flight with 22 goals from 25 appearances.
Lagging eight goals behind the 34-year-old striker are his Madrid teammate Vinicius Junior and Enes Unal and Raul de Tomas of Getafe and Espanyol, respectively.
Kylian Mbappe’s faltering bid to win the Ligue 1 top scorer award for the second season running is up in the air following Paris Saint-Germain’s drop-off.
The 22-year-old forward has clocked up 15 goals this domestic campaign, one less than Rennes’ Martin Terrier, who has been nothing short of impressive this term.
However, both players are currently behind Wissam Ben Yedder. Monaco’s standout forward has amassed 17 goals and four assists this Ligue 1 season.
Despite Monaco’s underwhelming spell of form, the 31-year-old is a warm candidate to win his second top-scorer away in France’s top-flight after sharing the spoils with Mbappe in 2019/20.
Lewandowski is the front-runner in the European Golden Shoe race, having scored at least nine more goals than any other player from Europe’s top-five leagues.
Due to a league coefficient, Red Star Belgrade’s Ohi Omojiuanfo is second in the ranking despite netting 33 goals, two more than the Bayern star.
Therefore, Lewandowski will likely lift the award for the second season running. Lewandowski was also the top scorer in the 2021 calendar year, and if he stays at Bayern Munich next season he is likely to repeat the feat in 2022 as well.
