Inter have reportedly had several conversations with Gini Wijnaldum’s agent over a summer transfer to Italy from Liverpool.

According to Calcio Mercato, Inter manager Antonio Conte wants to add depth and experience to his squad and would like Wijnaldum to join up with him next season.

The report claims Wijnaldum has rejected every contract extension Liverpool have put on the table and has had more than one phone call with Inter over a potential move.

The most pertinent news to Liverpool in amongst all of that information is that Wijnaldum continues to reject contract extensions offered by the club. This shows that he is not particularly interested in staying at Liverpool, otherwise, he would – presumably – be more willing to listen to the offers and potentially sign a new deal with the club to clear up his future.

As it stands, Wijnaldum is set to become a free agent upon the expiry of his contract this summer. Inter would then be able to sign him without Liverpool being able to do anything to stop them having the conversations. This could be a big blow for Liverpool as Wijnaldum has started 36 matches in all competitions for the Reds, showing that he is a vital member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

If Wijnaldum ends up leaving Anfield to sign for Inter, Liverpool could need to replace him with a player good enough to start a similar number of games next season in the Premier League and Champions League. That means it is now down to Michael Edwards and his staff to pull the rabbit out of the hat and bring in a quality replacement for the Dutchman.
