Transfer News: FC Basel keeping a kene eye on Liverpool outcast Loris Karius

According to Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo), Swiss giants FC Basel are interested in signing German goalkeeper Loris Karius from Liverpool.

The 28-year-old hasn’t made a competitive appearance for the team since his disaster class in Kyiv against Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final. Karius has not been the same player since and was eventually loaned out to Besiktas and Union Berlin.

Alisson Becker is the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at the club. Caoimhim Kelleher and Adrian are behind him in the pecking order, leaving no spot open for Karius. It is fair to say that his time at the club is ticking.

Loris Karius had to withstand a tumultuous career at Liverpool

Basel were interested in the german shot-stopper in the summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Liverpool. They have not accepted defeat, however, and will rekindle their efforts when the window opens next.

Karius had a promising start to his career and signed with Manchester City as a 16-year-old in 2011. He eventually moved to Mainz where his performances caught the eye of Liverpool.

Karius initially rotated as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper alongside Simon Mignolet. He appeared to be coming into his element before the tragedy at Kyiv. He has not been the same since.

It is unfortunate but the goalkeeper’s career in red appears to be all but done and dusted. At 28, he has time on his side to rebuild his career elsewhere. he will be well advised to take it.

Liverpool are well stocked in the goalkeeping department and will not miss Karius if he is sold. The Reds are better off cashing in on the German and doing so will give both sides a chance to finally move on from a transfer that didn’t work out as planned.
