Just like in the last Euro and World Cup finals, England (the reigning European champions) and Spain (the reigning world champions) met again for this grand showdown at the top of women's football. It was a titanic clash between the two giants of the game.

Spain lived up to their billing by opening the scoring in the first half. Caldentey struck first, finding the back of the net before the half-hour mark (25', 1-0). In the second half, the Lionesses managed to pull level, with Russo netting the equalizer (57', 1-1).

With the score tied at the end of regular time, the match headed into extra time. Yet, even then, neither team could break the deadlock, leading to the nerve-wracking penalty shootout. In this dramatic showdown, Mead and Williamson missed their penalties for England, while three Spaniards faltered—Caldentey, Bonmati, and Paralluelo.
