EURO Damsgaard: “Togetherness and team spirit key for Denmark”

Almost 30 years after Denmark pulled off the most incredible European Championship success of all time – winning a tournament they didn’t even qualify for – they will attempt to conquer Europe again. The Danes go into Euro 2020 as outsiders once more, but on the plus side they have Samp starlet Mikkel Damsgaard among their ranks. And before boarding the plane to Copenhagen, the 20-old-year sat down to share his thoughts with us.

“We’re not the favourites but we could be the dark horse – we have to believe we can win it,” Mikkel opined.

“It’s a tough group with Belgium, Finland and Russia but I think we can beat anyone. We have a good chance of going through. It’s good to be able to play at home in front of our fans too.

“Everybody wants to fight and run for each other. We have great togetherness, a good team spirit and some excellent players, so I have high expectations.”

Mikkel only received his first senior call-up in November but earned his place in Kasper Hjulmand’s Euros squad with two goals and three assists in his first three appearances – and the youngster believes playing for Sampdoria has been good for his development.

“I think I had a good first season at Sampdoria. I learned a lot from my team-mates and from playing in Serie A. What I’ve improved most is my speed because you need to think a lot faster in Italy.

“I know I’m not one of the most important players in the Denmark team but it means a lot to be a part of it. Hopefully I can help a little bit by giving energy to the group.”
