Yet Bukayo Saka stepped up to fire in a superb equaliser before the quarter-final tie went to penalties. Jordan Pickford denied Manuel Akanji as Saka contributed to five perfect English penalties for the victory.

In the semi-final, Ollie Watkins hit the last-minute winner to beat the Netherlands.
