Euro 2024 is nearly over, with the final on Sunday, which means there’s only one game left in the Golden Boot race.

As we enter the final, six players are tied on three goals, with two set to go head-to-head in Berlin’s showdown.

Dani Olmo and Harry Kane scored three goals for Spain and England, respectively, and they have an excellent chance of winning the Golden Boot. Cody Gakpo missed the opportunity to take control, drawing a blank as England beat the Netherlands in the semi-final.

Georges Mikautadze, Ivan Schranz and Jamal Musiala have also scored three goals, with the latter knocked out in the quarter-final.

A host of players on two goals follow, including Jude Bellingham and Fabian Ruiz among the finalists. Bellingham, alongside Kane, was among the pre-tournament favourites to be top scorer, with Kylian Mbappe bowing out of the competition having scored just one penalty.

Euro 2024 Golden Boot favourites

Kylian Mbappe started the tournament as the favourite to win the Golden Boot, but saw his chances and odds take a hit due to a broken nose. Mbappe returned and opened his account for the tournament in France’s final group game, scoring a penalty as they drew 1-1 with Poland. However, he failed to score again since and in fact, rarely indeed threatened before France were knocked out by Spain in the semi-final.

When Mbappe’s odds lengthened, Harry Kane’s chances got shorter, and he still had a chance. Kane already won the European Golden Shoe for his club form with Bayern Munich, netting 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga games. He has also won a World Cup Golden Boot in 2018. It’s not been a great campaign for Kane but he has scored three goals, drawing level at the top thanks to his penalty against Netherlands in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner at Euro 2020 and scored ten goals in qualifying. He might be 39 years old and playing in Saudi Arabia, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner needs no second invitation on the big stage. However, he ended the tournament with a blank, as did Romelu Lukaku.

Who will win the Euro 2024 Golden Boot?

As we head to the final, Kane is once again the favourite. However, as it stands, he is not ahead. Dani Olmo leads the way thanks to also notching two assists. However, Fabian and Bellingham will also have their eyes on a late charge to the trophy, both tied on two goals.

But with such a low tally, a new name could easily propel themselves to the top with a stellar performance in the final. Whether that is likely, though, is another thing as no one has scored a hat-trick in a European Championship final. Could Ollie Watkins, perhaps, emulate Sir Geoff Hurst’s 1966 World Cup final heroics?

Euro 2024 Golden Boot tie-breaker

UEFA have announced that the Euro 2024 Golden Boot could be shared between six players if Sunday’s final match between England and Spain does not result in a single top goal-scorer. This marks a change from the previous tournament, Euro 2020, where Portugal’s Ronaldo was declared the winner due to having recorded one assist along with his five goals. In that tournament, Patrik Schick also scored five goals but missed out on the award because he did not register an assist.

If this comes to pass, three goals will be the lowest number of goals scored by a Golden Boot winner since Euro 2012. During that tournament, Fernando Torres (Spain), Mario Gomez (Germany), and Alan Dzagoev (Russia) all finished with three goals. Torres received the Golden Boot that year because he played fewer minutes than the other players who also scored three goals.

As mentioned, Kane and Olmo are among six players tied on three goals in the tournament. Gakpo (Netherlands), Mikautadze (Georgia), Musiala (Germany), and Schranz (Slovakia) form the congested leaderboard.

The Golden Boot is the award given to the tournament’s top goalscorer and there have been some illustrious winners. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Marco van Basten, the list of European Championships Golden Boot winners is a who’s who of the game’s greatest.

As the number of games at the European Championships has increased, so has the benchmark for winning the Golden Boot. That said, Michel Platini still holds the record for most goals scored at a single tournament, netting nine times in just five matches as he led France to the trophy on home soil in 1984. Platini is one of seven players to win the European Championships Golden Boot on home soil, including Alan Shearer (1996) and Patrick Kluivert (2000).

Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer in European Championships history, with 14 goals to date. That leaves him at least five clear of his nearest rival Platini, who scored all nine of his goals in one edition of the tournament. Alan Shearer, Harry Kane, Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann are the next closest with seven goals each.
