Scotland held Switzerland to a 1-1 draw as Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer was beaten by a deflection and Xherdan Shaqiri scored a scorcher, so qualification is still wide open.

Ryan Porteous was suspended following his red card in the opening 5-1 defeat to Germany, while the Swiss were again packed with Serie A players including Bologna midfielder Michel Aebischer, Remo Freuler and Torino full-back Ricardo Rodriguez.

There was a stroke of luck for the Scots to take the lead, as they broke on the counter from a Switzerland corner and saw the Scott McTominay strike deflected in off Fabian Schär, leaving Inter goalkeeper Sommer with no chance.

Similarly, there was no stopping the absolute screamer from Xherdan Shaqiri, which he smashed first time from outside the box into the top corner after intercepting a terrible Anthony Ralston back-pass.

Angus Gunn and then the offside flag did manage to deny Bologna forward Dan Ndoye a goal, while the striker also turned wide when sent clear on goal, a move during which Kieran Tierney had to be stretchered off with a hamstring strain.

Grant Hanley nodded an Andrew Robertson free kick onto the upright from close range and McTominay had an acrobatic volley charged down, while Breel Embolo was offside on a lob into the empty net.

Both sides kept wasting chances, Zeki Amdouni heading a free kick wide at the back post, and ultimately it leaves qualification wide open behind Germany.
