More than three quarters of the nation’s television viewers watched Gareth Southgate’s side book a semi-final meeting with Holland.

The quarter-final was also streamed 8.9 million times across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app.

The figures were not as high as England’s last-16 win over Slovakia, which drew a peak audience of 18.4 million viewers on ITV.

England’s opening game against Serbia had a peak audience of 15m, while their second match with Denmark peaked at 13.1m. The lacklustre draw with Slovenia drew a peak television audience of 15.4million viewers.

Wednesday’s semi-final with Holland in Dortmund will be shown on ITV.

The other semi-final between Spain and France on Tuesday will be shown on the BBC.

The Euro 2024 final is in Berlin next Sunday.
