The Red Flames did well to come back and earn a draw against Iceland on Sunday and might have nicked it were it not for some good goalkeeping late in the second half.

Everything was going swimmingly for the Swiss when they were 2-0 up and cruising after just five minutes against Portugal on Saturday, but a second half capitulation saw them squander their lead and in the end, they were quite fortunate to escape with a draw.

The tournament outsiders showed great character to fight back and earn a draw from a nightmare start, but they will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to truly upset the odds in Group C.

It was a game of two halves for the side ranked second in the world as they dominated the Netherlands in the first 45 only to see their lead slip away after the break. A win against Switzerland on Wednesday is a must.

Losing two players to injury and being 1-0 down at half-time was a less than ideal start to the tournament for the Dutch, but their second half fight back was much more like it and Jill Roord could and should have won it late on.

5. England

The hosts began with a rather unconvincing 1-0 victory over Austria, but a win is a win and coach Sarina Wiegman will be hoping the Lionesses grow into the tournament, beginning with Monday night’s clash with Norway.

The Norwegians will be brimming with confidence for that England encounter after they put Northern Ireland to the sword with a dominant 4-1 victory in which Caroline Graham Hansen was particularly impressive.

After losing Alexia Putellas to injury on the eve of the tournament and falling behind after just 50 seconds against Finland, La Roja could have been forgiven for thinking this wasn’t going to be their year. Instead, they showed their class and went on to win 4-1, a scoreline that ultimately flattered the Finns.

Of all the big victories so far, it was France’s 5-1 drubbing of Italy on Sunday night which has sent out the biggest message. Les Bleus were ruthless in a first half that saw them score five times, with Grace Geyoro’s hat-trick giving her an early edge in the Golden Boot race. Let’s see if they can carry that momentum into Thursday’s clash with Belgium.
