There may be more established names involved at this summer’s Euros but it could be a German striker who steals the show in England.

To those who don’t know her, it would be a surprise if Lea Schüller walks away with the Golden Boot at the end of July should Germany progress far in the competition. But those who have watched her probably wouldn’t rule it out.

This is the 2021/22 Frauen-Bundesliga top goalscorer we’re talking about after all.

The 24-year-old has been an upward trajectory for a few seasons now, with her 16 goal return in 2021/22 topping everybody else in the division.

It didn’t end in silverware but Schüller did lift the Bundesliga title the season before, her first at Bayern, scoring 16 then too.

Schüller has the habit of being in the right place at the right time, with the vast majority of her goals coming from inside the area.

It takes skill and awareness to arrive in the right place, and 124 goals in 206 appearances at club level for SGS Essen and Bayern prove her poacher’s instincts.

There are the goals that come from sniffing out chances when the ball falls free inside the box but Schüller has also bagged headed goals in abundance.

The striker has been doing the business at club level for years now but it’s her country who need the goals this summer.

Germany are outsiders this summer, by their standards, but Schüller has shown she can find the back of the net at international level too.

She marked her international debut with a goal, coming on as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Iceland in 2019, and scoring in a 3-2 defeat. The next time she found the back of the net for her country was something special, netting all four goals in a 4-0 win over Czech Republic.

With 25 goals in 38 caps, Germany can throw all their chips on Schüller.

There could be individual and collective success on the cards if she’s in form this July.
