Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps has revealed why she danced on the table after gatecrashing Sarina Wiegman’s press conference on Sunday.

England beat Germany 2-1 at Wembley to secure their first ever major silverware and Earps produced an inspired performance in net.

The Manchester United star, who conceded just two goals all tournament, made five saves on the night and dealt with a barrage of German pressure.

Following the match, England’s players were jubilant and interrupted coach Wiegman’s press conference by walking into the media room and singing “It’s coming home.”

As the squad paraded around their manager, Earps took it upon herself to get up on the table and start dancing.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Earps admitted that she forgot the journalists in the room were even there.

“It sounds bizarre but I didn’t think anybody was in there,” she said. “I thought I was just celebrating with the girls. I honestly didn’t think about it… I wouldn’t have done it if I’d realised because those dance moves shouldn’t have been shown to millions of people.

“It was just the realisation of ‘oh my gosh, we’ve done it’, this is what everybody wanted. An incredible feeling!”

Since winning the tournament, the players have been busy celebrating and Earps says the magnitude of their achievement is only just beginning to set in.

“[Winning the Euros] definitely doesn’t feel real. We’ve not spent much time reflecting over the past two days. It has been pretty full-on and unbelievable.

“I look back with immense pride because I definitely didn’t expect to be doing this over the summer. I think people who know me the last couple of years have not been easy; I’d made peace with not being an England player any longer. Then Sarina [Wiegman] came in and it all changed. It has been such a privilege and this summer has been the best summer ever.”

Earps hopes that England’s win will help improve the future of women’s football and increase opportunities for girls in schools.

“Ian Wright and a few of the girls have been really vocal about the issue, it is really important,” she stressed. “This has been such a fantastic summer of football, not women’s football, football in general. That is the key thing to highlight. Hopefully, we’ll see a change.

“I’m having so many messages from so many people saying how great it was and how their daughter especially, but son’s too, are in the garden practicing their goalkeeping or playing football. That is what we want. We want girls to have access. Football is the best sport in the world, everyone just wants to play.”

For now, though, Earps is focusing on enjoying herself and relaxing before her season with Man United gets underway.

“I’m now on holiday. I get a couple of weeks off to relax but the 48 hours after the win were heavy, a lot of partying! I think I’m getting a bit too old for it. I need 10 days to unwind from that!”
