Much of the build-up to Sunday’s final was dominated by speculation about which of Beth Mead or Alexandra Popp would clinch the Golden Boot.

But in the end, it was an unassuming holding midfielder who stole the show.

Walsh started every match for England at the tournament and was one of the first names on Sarina Wiegman’s team-sheet.

The 25-year-old’s positional awareness meant she bossed every midfield she was part of, and her brilliant range of passing was a joy to watch, with her ball over the top for Ella Toone’s goal in the final being the pick of the bunch.

A Rolls Royce of a footballer and a worthy champion.

Runner-up: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Beth Mead

Stanway’s stunner against Spain was a goal worthy of winning any game – the fact it meant England came from behind to knock a strong Spain side out in the quarter-finals made it all the more special.

A beautiful goal from a humble, hard-working player. You love to see it.

Runner-up: 🇳🇱 Daniëlle van de Donk vs Portugal

🔥 Match of the Tournament

Winner: France 5-1 Italy

The best team performance of the whole tournament came when France dismantled Italy in what was both sides’ first group fixture.

The brilliant Grace Geyoro opened the scoring after nine minutes in Rotherham and had completed her hat-trick by half-time, while the goal of the game was a beautiful dipping strike from Delphine Cascarino.

Les Bleues were electric that night and will remember it fondly, despite their eventual elimination in the semi-finals.

Runner-up: Netherlands 3-2 Portugal

😭 Upset of the Tournament

Winner: England 8-0 Norway

England beating Norway may not be a huge upset in and of itself but the nature of this particular defeat certainly was.

With Ada Hegerberg back in the fold, many considered the Norwegians to be among the handful of favourites heading into the tournament and they made a strong start with a 4-1 win over Northern Ireland.

But their second fixture pitted them against the hosts in Brighton, and what a humbling experience it was. By half-time it was already 6-0, and by full-time the visitors were fortunate it was only eight.

Norway couldn’t recover from that massive blow to their confidence and after they failed to make it out of the group, coach Martin Sjögren was left with little choice but to tender his resignation.

Runner-up: Italy 0-1 Belgium

👏 Young Player of the Tournament

Winner: 🇩🇪 Lena Oberdorf

She understandably didn’t look too happy when picking up the award but Oberdorf thoroughly deserved her Young Player of the Tournament gong.

The 20-year-old looks wise beyond her years in that disciplined defensive midfield role and she was Germany’s anchor as she snapped into tackles and recycled possession intelligently throughout the tournament.

If the Wolfsburg midfielder is this good now, imagine what she might be capable of at next summer’s World Cup.

“Next year at the World Cup, maybe she can even be more dangerous offensively because she can do that too,” said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg after the final.

A frightening prospect.

Runner-up: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Alessia Russo
