Ethan Mbappé made his Paris Saint-Germain debut in the 3-1 win over FC Metz last Wednesday at the Parc des Princes. It was only a few minutes. However, playing professional football at 16 is a notable achievement.
Nonetheless, the question surrounding the midfielder is what type of player PSG has on their hands. The Parisians will lean on their academy more than they have in the past. Warren Zaire-Emery is the jewel that’s already impacting the first team. Can the youngest Mbappé follow suit?
After making his professional debut, L’Equipe spoke with a scout to get a sense of the teenager’s talent. PSG’s academy has churned out many talented players, and it appears Mbappé is the next one.
“When I look at the U19 squad, he’s one of the best,” the scout told the French media outlet (h/t Paris Fans). “He’s made great progress over the last 18 months, becoming simpler and more efficient in his distribution. And he’s working for the team.
“Over the last few months, you have to separate the potential from the collective context, where this generation is much weaker than those that preceded it. Ethan, you can feel the potential. He’s a player with real technical ability who understands the game.
“He’s always intent, even if it means overdoing it, on breaking lines with his passes (…) He’s made progress in defensive transition and volume. He still needs to improve his speed of execution.”
The younger Mbappé seems to have the potential to hold his own and not solely be known as “Kylian’s little brother.” PSG will now have to secure the player to his first professional contract as talks are underway between the two sides.
