A thrilling encounter took place over 90 minutes with the visitors initially the luckier side when it came to scoring.

Saúl Ñíguez bagged his second goal in as many games with a finish from an incredibly tight angle after Mario Hermoso’s inch-perfect through ball went right to his feet in the box.

It remained 1-0 up until right before the break as Antoine Griezmann made the most of an empty net and 15 seconds after the restart, Yannick Carrasco capitalised on a defensive slip for another.

But two shots in the first two minutes from the hosts signalled Espanyol were ready for the challenge, and despite being 3-0 down, they pulled off an impressive comeback.

With a significant lead, Diego Simeone’s side then took their foot off the gas and will be scratching their heads wondering how they crumbled.

César Montes erased any clean sheet hopes and kickstarted some life with a towering header before it was the visitors’ turn to make a mistake.

Joselu made things a one-goal game after goalkeeper Ivo Grbić conceded a penalty which sent the stadium into cheers.

And with confidence running high, Espanyol wracked up 26 shots to Atlético’s 16 which eventually saw substitute Vinícius Souza’s header pull things level.

The result is huge for the hosts as they sit only three points off of LaLiga safety with two games to go. The visitors, meanwhile, dropped to third following Real Madrid’s earlier win.
