Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland has no release clause in his existing contract, Goal claims.
The Norwegian has been tipped to pursue a bigger challenge. It has been speculated that he has a release clause worth £63 million in his contract which becomes active this summer.
However, according to Goal, there is no such buy-out clause available. Instead, it is a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ between the Bundesliga outfit and the player’s entourage.
On that basis, Dortmund can sell him for a much higher fee this summer, but the deal will also depend on Haaland, who is expected to make the right choice for his career.
While Dortmund are prepared to honour the agreement with the player, they may have to announce when a transfer is close as per the German financial regulations.
Being listed as a stock company, the club have an obligation to their shareholders and need to inform them in advance as there could be a significant drop in share prices.
There are no front-runners to sign Haaland at the moment, but it has been revealed that an unnamed Premier League club made an approach earlier in the campaign.
They were put off by the player’s staggering £29m annual wage demands after tax. It is now reported that the striker has lowered his requirements to around £21m per year.
It is still an enormous outlay, considering that would equate to a gross salary of around £42m yearly.
Over five seasons, it would come to more than £200m in wages alone. Haaland’s next club would also need to provide a huge brokerage sum for his agent Mino Raiola.
Raiola pocketed an astonishing £41.39m from Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United in 2016. He could command a higher figure for Haaland’s summer switch.
Not many clubs in world football can afford to meet the finances required. Judging by reports, Manchester City and Real Madrid could be the main contenders for Haaland.
With Madrid focusing on a free transfer for Kylian Mbappe, the Cityzens appear to be the front-runners to pursue the 21-year-old, who has 23 goals and six assists for Dortmund this term.
