Ajax’s European ride has come to an end after they drew Roma 1-1 on Thursday night in Italy, falling 3-2 on aggregate.
After the match, manager Erik ten Hag was beside himself as he believed his Ajax side was far superior but just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net.
“It’s frustrating. The best team has been eliminated,” Ten Hag told RTL7.
“The team that dominated both matches is out. It’s such a shame, as just like last week, we created plenty of chances, but failed to take advantage of them.
“Brobbey brought exactly the kind of impact we were looking for and had a great performance as a substitute.”
Dušan Tadić had appeared to make it 2-0 later on but the goal was disallowed after VAR judged there to be a foul on Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the build-up.
“That goal was disallowed for incomprehensible reasons,” Ten Hag told ESPN. “The referee was on top of it and let the game go on. If he judged the situation, it’s just a legal goal.”
As for the Amsterdam giants, they will have to turn it around quickly as silverware is on the line in Sunday’s KNVB Cup final against Vitesse.
