The former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed as Xabi Alonso’s successor at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso guided Leverkusen to a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023/24 season. This season, they finished second in the league, 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.

The 55-year-old manager was announced after Alonso was officially announced as Real Madrid’s new head coach on Sunday.

The role marks Ten Hag’s first return to management since leaving United in October. During his spell at Old Trafford, Ten Hag won both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, but was sacked with United sitting 14th in the Premier League.

Before joining United in 2022, the Dutchman enjoyed a highly successful period in charge of Ajax.
