Erik ten Hag has called for Lisandro Martinez to show resilience after confirmation of his latest injury setback.

The Manchester United star has been ruled out of action for around two-to-three months due to his metatarsal fracture – that ended his 2022/2023 campaign prematurely in April – being aggravated at the beginning of the season.

Martinez had undergone surgery to correct the problem the first time around, but it has since flared up and consequently, he’ll miss a significant chunk of the side’s upcoming run of fixtures in all competitions.

It comes as the latest in a line of huge injury blows for United; Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all long-term absentees, but 16 players have sustained injuries or been ill since so far this term. Everyone bar Victor Lindelof has missed a game, as per Samuel Luckhurst.

Fixture overload led to United injury crisis

Last season, United played nearly the most matches of any team across Europe and also played more pre-season fixtures than most of their Premier League rivals, so it’s no surprise that the squad are feeling the effects of the overload now. Hopefully, it won’t derail the results too much.

When asked about the Argentine’s layoff, Ten Hag told MUTV: “That’s really sad, disappointing news. He has to go through the same process and I’m really sorry for him. The squad will miss him. As you know, we have more injuries, so we always have to deal with it as a squad. As a club, we have to deal with injuries.”

“He has to be strong,” the manager continued. “He will fight back, I’m sure. He is a character. There is still a long season ahead and he will be fit. We have to do our job, to get ourselves in the right position, so he can contribute, and add quality when he returns.”
