Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he needs no assurances from INEOS that he will keep his job before or after tomorrow’s FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.

Ten Hag was facing the press in the embargoed section of the pre-match press conference and was asked a question about whether he will sit down with INEOS after tomorrow’s game to discuss his future.

“No, we already did it. On Sunday I will go on holiday,” he responded. “I think I deserve it. It is not necessary [to get assurances from INEOS], we will go for next season.”

Asked if he and the new owners are agreed over the future, he replied:

“Of course, we are together. Since January they have been part of this club and they want us to win trophies.

“This club didn’t win many trophies in the last 10 years, so now we have the second opportunity in two years and it is a big opportunity to win another trophy.”

Speaking about tomorrow’s game, the boss said:

“We will be in a very different place if we win on Saturday because we will be in Europe and we will have another trophy. But still, three finals in two seasons is very good, I would say, because this club when I entered it was not in a good state, absolutely not.

“Saturday we are going to have to suffer, sacrifice out of possession because they [City] are good at it. We have to fight and be organised defensively, and if we can do that, we have an opportunity. We know they play at very high levels. We have to get up to those levels. We want to be the best. That is our target.

“Last season, you can’t change it anymore but when we analysed that match, we were better than them [Man City in the FA Cup final].”

He was also asked what he felt United could achieve next season if he remains in charge.

“We are definitely competitive for top four,” he said.

“But the competition, the Premier League, there are many teams in this moment who battle for the top four. But we are definitely in there.

“We would have been [top four] this season – if the players would have been available. But that is the biggest thing that has to change, that players over the course of the season are available.”

Comments from the first part of the presser can be read here.

Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 3pm.
