Manchester United have six games remaining in all competitions before the season is broken by this winter’s World Cup in Qatar and now, Erik ten Hag has been dealt a huge fitness blow.

Raphael Varane has been one of United’s most important players this season, with the Frenchman striking a brilliant partnership with new signing Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the United defence.

It seemed like Varane had finally rid of the injury problems that plagued his first campaign at Old Trafford but last weekend against Chelsea, he sustained what looked like quite a serious setback.

Now, speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game against FC Sheriff at Old Trafford, Ten Hag has confirmed that Varane will play no part in any of the six remaining games.

“Rapha Varane isn’t in the squad,” he is quoted as saying by the official Manchester United website. “He will be out, certainly until the World Cup so he will not play in this block [of games] for Man United.”

Ten Hag did, however, easy any fears that Varane’s injury could rule him out of the World Cup. France are looking to make it back-to-back wins after winning the tournament in Russia four years ago.

“I think so,” Ten Hag said on the possibility of Varane featuring in Qatar. “But the prognosis we have to wait. We have to see how it develops, how the rehab will develop.”
