Ajax back in the market for Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn

Speaking to Voetbal International via the Spurs web (h/t Football.london), AFC Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has admitted that they are on the lookout for a forward this summer, with Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn a possible option.

Bergwijn, who joined Tottenham in January 2020, played his first full season last term. The Dutchman made only 21 Premier League appearances and racked up 4 assists in the same period. The 23-year-old did suffer from multiple injuries last season that could have hampered his form and performances over the course of the season.

Tottenham have already let go of Erik Lamela this summer but did orchestrate a swap deal with Sevilla, which led to the club signing 20-year-old winger Bryan Gil. Thus, apart from Bergwijn, Tottenham currently have the likes of Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Bryan Gil, and Giovani Lo Celso in the forward area.

And this, according to Football.london, presents Tottenham with a conundrum – whether to cash in on him this summer or if they should give him another season to justify his £27million price tag.

Although the Dutchman would be keen to prove his doubters wrong, Erik Ten Hag’s comments could make the player think twice about his future. Speaking to Voetbal International via the Spurs web (h/t Football. London), Ten Hag said:

“I never go into names. But it is like ABC, if I explain the profile here, Bergwijn fits it. But I’m not going to go into that whether it’s even possible.” Tottenham signed Steven Bergwijn in January 2020

However, with uncertainty already looming over Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham, Spurs are not ‘convinced’ about letting Bergwijn leave this summer, while Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also covered this in his ‘The Here We Go’ podcast (h/t Football. London). He said:

“About Steven Bergwijn, because at the moment we have a lot of rumours about Ajax, and it’s true that Ajax want the player, but at the moment, Tottenham are not convinced about letting him go. So, I won’t be surprised if the player will be staying at the club next season.”

  • Tottenham Hotspur closer than ever to the signature of Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu
  • Manchester United have their eyes on Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane for next season
  • Graham Roberts insists Tottenham should sell club captain Hugo Lloris

Thus, it remains to be seen whether Steven Bergwijn will stay at Tottenham beyond this summer.
