Erik ten Hag could not have asked for a better start to his reign at Manchester United.
The Red Devils endured a woeful season last time out, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick struggling immensely as manager of the team.
But Ten Hag worked wonders at Ajax and as such, fans have been cautiously optimistic going into the 2022/23 campaign.
And those optimism levels will have increased tenfold after United beat Liverpool 4-0 in a pre-season derby on Tuesday.
Goals from Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellestri secured the impressive victory for Ten Hag’s new-look side.
As well as picking up a confidence-boosting win to kickstart their pre-season campaign, United were presented with a trophy known as the Bangkok Century Cup.
The Red Devils haven’t got their hands on silverware since 2016/17, when Jose Mourinho‘s side won both the League Cup and UEFA Europa League.
It’s certainly been quite the drought for the most successful club of the Premier League era, so even though it’s a pre-season friendly, the sight of the players and Ten Hag holding a trophy was very pleasing for the long-suffering fans.
There was one moment in particular during the presentation in the capital of Thailand that went down well with supporters on social media.
While Ten Hag and Bruno Fernandes held the large trophy together, one person went over to the United manager and started touching his bald head.
They appeared to be removing a piece of confetti, but that hasn’t stopped the Red Devils faithful enjoying the footage…
The person who touched Ten Hag’s head during the presentation appears to be Chinese singer Jackson Wang, who performed live inside the stadium before the game.
Despite the impressive win, Ten Hag was keen to stress in his post-match interview that United still have a lot of work to do as we approach the new domestic season.
He told MUTV: “We did the press, a few mistakes in pressing, conceded some chances, but we also created a lot. I think our team played brave, played proactive. We have to work really hard to get out of the mistakes, but of course we are happy with the first game.
“[It will take] a lot of time. Believe me. I have seen a lot of mistakes. Liverpool played three teams, and they were not at their strongest. We have not overestimated this result.
“We have to be careful, but still, I have seen some really good things, and I think what we see, we have a lot of creativity and speed in front. We have potential.”
